Richard Kanter

Richard brings over twenty years of sports industry experience to Kanter Sports clients. Prior to representing coaches, he worked as an attorney representing professional athletes and sports brands. He previously worked with the Baltimore Orioles, University of Kentucky, an Olympics/NFL agency, an NBA agency, the Washington Wizards, and the Brooklyn Nets. 

Richard teaches sports law in the George Mason University Sports Management program and the VCU Center for Sport Leadership. He is a member of the Sports Lawyers Association, the Maryland Bar, and the District of Columbia Bar.

Richard resides in Virginia with his wife and three children. He graduated from the University of Kentucky (B.B.A., 2008) and George Mason University (J.D., 2012). He was a student manager for the Kentucky baseball team and the President of the George Mason Sports Law Association.

Kanter Sports provides full-service representation to baseball and softball coaches at the college and professional levels.

OUR FOCUS

• Secure contracts that fairly compensate and protect coaches for the full term of the deal. A contract negotiation is about market research, leverage, and using relevant factors in your favor. This preparation aids our clients at the negotiating table.

• Build and maintain relationships with NCAA athletic administrators and MLB front offices that lead to opportunities for coaches during the search process. We have the foresight and communication skills necessary to build a positive rapport with administrators so the relationship between a coach and current, future, and previous employers remains productive.

• Provide client-focused support that helps coaches achieve their own definition of success, on and off the diamond.

LEGAL SERVICES

Transactional law services are provided through Kanter Legal for businesses and individuals in the sports industry. Services include the following: contract review/negotiation (employment agreements, endorsement deals, speaking engagements, and appearances), business entity selection, filing of business formation documents, and bylaw drafting.
